Media Specialist, Uganda Rights of Rule of Law Activity, at IREX International Uganda

Position Summary/: IREX seeks a Media Specialist to assist in implementing an expected USAID-
funded rule of law program in Uganda. The program goal is to empower Ugandans to demand and assert their rights, and help increase the capacity of duty bearers to provide rights. The project will address three major areas: supporting an independent judiciary; fostering advocacy; and advancing the flow of information, including through media.

Major Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support efforts to protect the free flow of information using the media and help professionalize the media.
  • Improve professionalism and ethics of the media as a key source of information for Ugandans
  • Foster expertise on human rights and rule of law issues among journalists and editors to help improve the accuracy of reporting, and to help in the dissemination of factually objective information
  • Strengthening institutions that regulate the media while also promoting and protecting the rights of individuals
  • Develop and maintain effective collaborations with program partners and key stakeholders
  • Represent IREX and support its organizational development
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in journalism, mass media, or in a related social science discipline is highly preferred
  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in media advocacy and engagement on rule of law and rights matters
  • Must have at least 2 years of technical experience in dealing with multiple stakeholders including the media, judiciary, CSOs, and adjudication institutions in a developing country
  • Possess demonstrated experience in media in Uganda
  • Demonstrated team player with visionary leadership
  • Experience working with USG supported projects
  • Experience in mentoring, coaching and skills transfer
  • Excellent representational and communication skills, written and oral proficiency in English
