JOB TITLE: Programme Officer, African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies (ACJPS)
REPORTING TO: Programme Director.
SALARY: $1,500/month (fixed term contract at 5 months)

ACJPS BACKGROUND:

ACJPS is a Sudan-focused human rights organisation whose core work includes: Monitoring, documenting and reporting on human rights violations in Sudan; strategic litigation to highlight violations of human rights as well as the provision of legal assistance to individuals and groups; advocacy and support for efforts to use international and regional mechanisms to hold perpetrators of serious violations of human rights and international crimes to account; legal and human rights education and training and media campaigns to raise awareness of the rights and freedoms of individuals and groups, and to foster a culture of human rights; and advocacy and technical support to advance and implement international human rights standards within Sudan. GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The temporary post will provide substantial support to the organization to identify and apply for funding and financial support and provide other programmatic support as necessary. The temporary Programme Officer will also provide emergency support to ACJPS to respond to conduct a special documentation project concerning the excessive use of force by Sudanese authorities against protestors throughout the country.

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Primary responsibilities:• Research and draft ACJPS’ bi-monthly human rights monitor, closely following political developments inside the country, in close coordination with the Monitoring Programme Coordinator and Programme Officer.
• Collate and analyse human rights monitoring.
• Provide drafting, editing and layout assistance for other ACJPS publications, as needed.
• Conduct donor research and identify new sources of funding for the organization, including preparing first drafts of applications to donors in cooperation with the Programme Officer and other Programme Staff.
• Preparing first drafts of narrative reports for donors and liaising with the organisation’s Finance Manager to ensure preparation of the relevant financial reports.
• Provide editing and research assistance to ACJPS’ Legal Programme
• Develop and maintaining the English platform of the ACJPS website alongside the Programme Officer and social media presence and designing strategies for their promotion in cooperation with the Programme Director.

Other
• Providing administrative and logistical support for the conduct of ACJPS conferences, workshops and other events.
• Perform other tasks as required.

Supervisory responsibilities:
• None.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential

• Sound knowledge and experience of working on a range of human rights issues; exposure to and knowledge of the human rights and political context in Sudan.
• Excellent analytical and research skills, including ability to evaluate and integrate information from a variety of sources and assess impacts on the human rights situation in the country.
• Excellent communication (spoken, written and presentational) skills in English, including the ability to produce a variety of written reports in a clear, concise style as well as ability to build/maintain effective partnerships, manage contacts and website material.
• Experience of fundraising and donor liaison.
• Excellent time keeping skills and ability to establish priorities and to plan work assignments, juggle competing demands and work under pressure of frequent and tight deadlines.
• Proven interpersonal skills and ability to work in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, human rights, social or political science, international relations, development studies or related fields, or relevant experience.

Desirable
• Experience drafting and managing project budgets.
• Good knowledge of United Nations’ institutional mandates, policies and guidelines related to human rights, especially economic, social and cultural rights.
